Travel
Lugano is situated in Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, close to the Italian border. The city is easy to reach by means of both public and private transportation.
By Air
Flights to either Zurich or Milan Malpensa offer the best options for getting to Lugano, with onward travel by train. Private transfers are also available if preferred – please see below for prices and booking information.
Zurich may be the best option for those requiring a visa as only a Swiss visa will be needed (if flying through Milan, an Italian visa will also be needed).
Travel to Lugano from Zurich
The train connection from Zurich airport (about 220 km from Lugano) is an efficient and pleasant option; with the new rail link through the Alps opened in December 2016. The journey – through some of Switzerland’s most beautiful landscapes and views – takes about 2 hours 40 minutes.
Please visit https://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable.html for prices, timetables and online bookings.
Travel to Lugano from Milan Malpensa
Lugano is connected by train to Milan-Malpensa International Airport, the closest international airport (about 60 km from Lugano). The train trip takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Timetables, prices and online booking can be found at https://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable.html or https://www.trenord.it/EN/.
Other alternatives are Milan-Linate and Bergamo-Orio al Serio airports, both in Italy, connected to Milan by bus and then to Lugano by train.
Travel to your hotel from Lugano Railway Station
Funicular: The funicular connects the railway station with the city centre (Piazza Cioccaro), with services running from 05.00 to 24.00 daily. Tickets cost CHF 1.30 per person and trips take 92 seconds! Click here for more details.
On Foot: Lugano is a small town and most places can be reached on foot. The railway station is approximately 1.2 km from the meeting venue (15 minute walk). To check the distance between the railway station and your chosen hotel, we recommend using Google Maps.
By Taxi: Call +41 91 922 88 33. Estimated cost: CHF 15.00 (to city centre).

By Rail
The Swiss National Railway is extremely long and allows you to conveniently reach Lugano from the rest of Switzerland and from other international destinations. From the railway station, the Congress Hall can either be reached on foot (approx. 15 minutes) or by means of public transportation: funicular or bus.
By Road
Lugano is on the international Gothard motorway (Zurich-Chiasso-Milan) which directly connects Northern Europe with the Mediterranean.
It is possible to park in the multi-storey car park right in front of the Congress Hall, located under Piazza Castello. Other city centre car parks are available within walking distance.
All delegates staying in a hotel, hostel or camping in the Ticino region and subject to the full tourist tax are entitled to the Ticino Ticket – a pass valid for the duration of their stay. Ticino Ticket holders can use – free of charge – the regular public transportation system (including trains, buses and postal buses of the “Arcobaleno Community”) and receive a discount on cable cars, funicular and other tourist attractions.
